MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine National Police (PNP) went on highest alert this weekend to make sure all police units are fully prepared to deal with Labor Day rallies.
The PNP said they would not stop workers’ groups from staging their usual May 1 rallies but would enforce peace and order. This year’s Labor Day falls on a Sunday.
PNP chief Director General Raul Bacalzo placed the 138,000-strong national police force under full alert effective April 30, Saturday.
He declared a heightened alert status, which is one notch below full alert, on April 29, Friday.
“As workers in government, policemen also deserve to enjoy and commemorate the significance of Labor Day,” Bacalzo said.
“However as law enforcers, duty calls that we must report for work on that day to preclude any threat of violence and disorder on this otherwise peaceful and meaningful celebration of international Labor Day,” he added.
Bacalzo has directed all police unit commanders to extend their assistance to labor groups to ensure security during their mass actions.
“The PNP joins the entire nation in paying tribute to the Filipino workforce for providing the muscle to fuel the national economy and move the country forward. It is our duty as police officers to make this day peaceful and significant for all,” Bacalzo said.
PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Agrimero Cruz Jr. said police commanders have also been instructed to provide security near the venues of the public assemblies to prevent criminals and other lawless elements from taking advantage of the Labor Day activities.
“Our job is not to prevent people from holding public assemblies but to enforce the law and remind participants of their responsibilities when holding public assemblies,” Cruz said.
He said the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) and the PNP Special Action Force (SAF) went on full alert Friday or two days before May 1 since Metro Manila is expected to be the hub of Labor Day activities of national labor organizations.
